Gorkha Janamukti Morcha asks Trinamool to back them for a RS seat

Kolkata: With Trinamool Congress yet to drop any hint of support to Congress in the event of the latter putting up a nominee for the forthcoming election to five Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha on Tuesday requested Mamata Banerjee to back their candidate.

"We request the Chief Minister (Mamata Banerjee) to allocate one of the Rajya Sabha seats to the GJM to represent the hills (Darjeeling). Our president Bimal Gurung will write to her while a GJM delegation would also meet her to make similar request," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said to sources of Darjeeling.

He dismissed suggestions that the GJM's plea to contestin the Rajya Sabha election was as part of a move to put pressure on the state government regarding the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) or it had anything to do to scuttle the Congress's move to get TMC's support for a seat. "This is not correct," he said.

President Pratibha Patil has recently given her assent to GTA bill but GJM has said they won’t' allow elections to the GTA till added areas in Dooars and Terai are included within its territory.

Banerjee has said that election to GTA would be held in accordance with the GTA agreement. Five persons from West Bengal will be elected to the Rajya Sabha as five seats will fall vacant on April 2.
