Merit lists of 100 Madhyamik and HS students to be published this year

KOLKATA, 2 MAY: The state government will publish merit lists of 100 students in both Madhyamik and Higher Secondary exams this year. A letter has been recently sent from the school education department to West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. Following the introduction of grade system on the lines of all-India boards, merit lists were abolished during the rule of the erstwhile CPI-M government.
However, according to chief minister's wishes, last year the toppers were awarded by Miss Mamata Banerjee. But from this year onwards, merit lists will be published officially, along with full marks, confirmed the heads of Madhyamik Board and Higher Secondary Council. However, questions have been raised as the government has decided to award first 100 students, moving away from the traditional practice of declaring ranks. “If two students hold the same rank, they will be arranged alphabetically,” said Mr Vikram Sen, principal secretary, State School Education Department, adding: “The merit lists will be published just to encourage the students.”sns
