The Bandi Mukti Committee would launch a statewide stir to mount pressure on the state government to unconditionally release the elected Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) representatives and the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) activists, who are now lodged in different correctional homes. The committee members said barring the political parties from carrying on with their normal functioning militates against the norms of democracy. They further demanded the arrested GJMM activists be treated as political prisoners.
“The committee activists would stage an agitation in Krishnanagar in Nadia on 27 September. It would be followed by another rally at Suri in Birbhum on 3 October. There would be rallies all over the state to press our demands,” said the general secretary of the committee, Mr Choton Das in Siliguri today.
“Around 1,300 persons have so far been arrested from the Hills. We are seeking appointments from the Chief Minister Miss Mamata Banerjee and the Governor Mr M K Narayanan to place our demands,” he added.
An eight-member committee had recently visited Kalimpong and Darjeeling and talked to the family members of the arrested persons there.(SNS)
