The
state government plans to encourage the preservation and cultivation of
rare medicinal plants found in the Darjeeling hills and will establish a
research centre. In addition, the government is preparing to take
initiatives for enhancement of mushroom and good quality Orange cultivation in the region to boost the local economy and create job
opportunities for locals, informed food processing and horticulture
minister Subrata Saha. He is due to visit Darjeeling in November.
Saha said the region is endemic to a
number of rare herb species, especially those with medicinal qualities.
The state government has also decided to modernise the Cinchona research
plant in Mungpoo, he added.
The minister further said the government
is committed to increase work opportunity in the hills and will soon
make initiatives to develop a good breed of orange that would help
cultivators of the region to regain their lost status. (EOIC)
