KALIMPONG,Pradip Lohagun,6 Dec 2013: Former cinchona and other medicinal herbs department director Dr. GC Subba has been appointed to the post of technical advisor in the GTA’s cinchona, horticulture and agricultural department. GTA sources informed Subba was appointed following the transfer of the cinchona department to the council.
He will officially take charge on December 12 after an official notification is issued by the GTA principal secretary.
Subba had served as director of the cinchona and other medicinal herbs department, a post that had remained vacant for several years. The post had been earlier occupied by Dr. PK Lala and after his retirement the responsibility was handed over to the Darjeeling DM.
After this transfer, the problems of the cinchona plantation workers had multiplied manifold. Even new recruitments had come to a halt endangering the future of the plantation and its workers. After taking up the post of director, Subba had resolved many of the problems, including labour recruitment. He also succeeded in increasing production and find markets for the produce, which helped cover part of the losses incurred by the industry in previous years.
