The bandh called today by the Dooars unit of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and PTWU over the recent rape incident in Birbhum district and closure of tea gardens in the region was successful and ended peacefully.
Normal life in Birpara, Banarhat, Binnaguri, Luksan and Nagrakatta was totally affected by the bandh as traffic came to a standstill. While JMM and PTWU supporters were seen picketing at strategically important places, the administration had deployed police forces at several vantage areas to avert any untoward incident. Shops and business establishments were also totally closed and as there were no vehicles plying, schools too remained closed for the day.
JMM leader John Barla expressed his gratitude to the people for their support in making the bandh a success. He said the shutdown was peaceful with no reports of violence from across the region. Barla accused those who were against the bandh as being against the welfare of the Adivasi community.
Meanwhile, Progressive People Party president Kiran Kalanandi was arrested along with four of his supporters in Nagrakatta. Condemning the arrests, Barla said, “Kalanandi is a very dedicated leader of our community. He has been actively participating in various activities for the welfare of our people. The whole Adivasi community of the Dooars supports him wholeheartedly.”(EOIC)
