Kurseong, 15 January : Even though several claims have been made by the concerned authorities,
the scarcity of drinking water is going up at different places in and
around Kurseong Municipality (KM) region.
It was learnt that the local people are facing a lot of problems due to scarcity of water or due to improper supply. This has been happening not only at a single place but in different areas of Kurseong region.
A resident of Kurseong said: "We have still been facing a lot of problems of fetching drinking water as most of the days the supply to our nearby public hydrant has been affected and stopped due to insufficient water due to various reasons."
He further added that this is not a new thing but such kind of water scarcity problems have been reported and seen in the locality for the past several years. He said that on different pretexts the concerned fitter fails to supply water, sometimes saying that there is insufficient water in the reservoirs and occasionally responds to our queries by saying there is no water in its natural sources.
He also said that earlier he even had a private water connection but with the passage of time, the supply of water dwindled and gradually it totally stooped. Finally, a time came when even the water pipes disappeared.
The KM, Water works councillor, Mr Subash Pradhan, said: "It is true that we have not been able to supply sufficient water to some areas within Kurseong but one must understand that the responsibility of the KM is only to distribute water to the common people. It is the work of the PHE to provide sufficient water to KM. If the supplies provided by the PHE to us is meager than what we do about it."
PHE officials could not be contacted.
Notably, the KM & PHE department has held several meetings earlier on proper supply of drinking water to its public in KM area. They have also been working on several water supply projects, including the Indo-Sweden water management but the problems have not yet been solved on the whole.(SNS)
