GTA chief distributes money to SCs, Lepchas

Bimal Gurung at Jogighat
Jogighat (Mungpoo): The GTA chief, Mr Bimal Gurung today distributed Rs 70,000 each to five persons belonging to the Lepcha  community and Rs 50,000 each to three persons from the Scheduled Caste.
The beneficiaries are learnt to be residing in areas in or around Jogi Ghat in the Kurseong sub-division.
Meanwhile, Mr Gurung's move to distribute largesse to the Lepcha community people, in particular, has raised eyebrows. It is being considered as a counter to similar largesse the chief minister bestows. She already sanctioned Rs 20 crore as a house building grants to 1,000 Lepcha families after the Mayal Lyang Lepcha Development Board (MLDB) had been formed.
Mr Gurung said the beneficiaries had been short-listed against the yardstick of backwardness. This is not from the GTA fund but from his party’s fund, he added.
Mr Gurung also distributed ‘Kamansingh Ramudamu’ old-age pension to around 34 senior citizens who had come to receive the cash of Rs 2,000 (January to April).
He said that the amount thus distributed has been collected from the salary of the GTA sabhasads.
“Such programmes will be held every month and 20 senior citizens will get Rs 500 as monthly old-age pension. This would cover all the 45 GTA constituencies", Mr Gurung said.
He also said that GTA will soon set up a new factory for Cinchona and Quinine plantations at Mungpoo.

GTA chief, Mr Bimal Gurung today distributed Rs 70,000 each to five persons belonging to the Lepcha community and Rs 50,000 each to three persons from the Scheduled Caste.
