The
GJM-backed Darjeeling Terai Dooars Plantation Labour Union or DTDPLU
will sit for talks with garden owners after the election results are
announced to press for minimum wages for tea workers. DTDPLU Mirik zonal
committee president Ajam Pradhan said tea workers must be given a
daily wage of Rs321 as per the Minimum Wages Act, but they are receiving
paid a meagre amount of just Rs90 per day. He added the wage increment
must be in accordance with the wages act this time and the government
and owners must take into consideration the market and price rise factor
while deciding the rates.
Pradhan said the union has on several occasions notified the concerned authority about the problems of tea garden workers. He noted paying wages as per the minimum wages act will also curb the exodus of locals.(EOIC)
