Siliguri boy Saurav Roy has made the
town proud for being selected for the Australian Official Taekwondo
Championship to be held in Melbourne, Australia on the first week of
October. Saurav’s opportunity came after he won the bronze at the 3rd
South Asian ITF Taekwondo Championship held recently in Kathmandu.
Saurav is the first Taekwondo player from this region to be selected for participating in the Australian event.
The 14-year-old is a student of class IX
at Sister Nivedita (Margaret) English School, Pradhan Nagar and his aim
is to make his country and region proud by bagging the gold medal in
the Olympics. Saurav started practicing Taekwondo since the age of 11
and his coach Amit Debnath has remained his guide in every success he
has achieved so far.
Talking about his protégé, Debnath said
Saurav is very talented and it was his effort and hard work that got him
selected directly for a state level championship in Mahadevi Birla
Academy of Kolkata where he bagged the gold, silver and bronze medals in
two separate categories in a state-level event held later at the same
venue.
Saurav was subsequently selected for an
international-level competition in Kathmandu at the Dashrath Indoor
Stadium organised by the National Sports Council. He defeated his
opponents from Sri Lanka and Nepal, but unfortunately lost the game
against his Mongolian rival.
Saurav’s mother Misha Ghoshal Roy said,
“Saurav is working hard for not only his family, but also for his
country. As any mother would, I have given my best efforts to ensure he
gets to participate in every major championship, but belonging to a
middle class family makes it difficult to cope with the financial
expenses involved.”
She urges local authorities and the state government to support Saurav to enable him to make the country proud.(EOIC)
