Mungpoo defers Rabindrantah Tagore birth anniversary events
Cultural programmes that were scheduled to be organized at Mungpoo in the the Kalimpong Sub-division to mark the 153rd birth anniversary of Rabindrantah Tagore have been postponed in view of the general elections this year.
The bard visited Mungpoo, a hamlet that was one of his favourite places, four times between 1938 and 1940.
The state information and cultural department observes the day on 9 May with grandeur, while the North Bengal Development Department (NBDD) and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) also extend their support to the state department.
"Programmes on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore will not be held at Mongpoo on 9 May this year because of the election model code of conduct. The officials will, however, offer garlands to Tagore’s statue there. The programmes will be held after the election process is over," Darjeeling district information and cultural officer Pasang Bal said.
In-charge of the cultural department, GTA, Binay Tamang, said GTA officials will attend the programme there.
Apart from eminent political and cultural personalities in the region, locals of the area and those from the cinchona plantations attend the programme every
year.
Artistes from Siliguri and other places also lend a hand to local artistes for the cultural programmes every year.
Notably, a memorial programme to commemorate the 72nd death anniversary of Tagore  could not be held in Mungpoo last year, with the Darjeeling Hills boiling over the Gorkhaland issue and the relationship between the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) and the state government hitting the lowest point.
Many works of Tagore, including ' Cheley Bela', 'Sesh Katha', ' Nava Jatak'  and 'Janamdin' are learnt to have been written at Mungpoo.
The Siliguri Sub-divisional and Cultural Officer Mitendra Chhetri said they would organise a programme in Siliguri by offering garlands to the statue of the bard at the Baghajatin Park on Friday.(SNS)
