After Paro-Bagdogra-Bangkok, Bagdogra airport is set to handle another
international flight—Kolkata-Kathmandu-Bagdogra-Kathmandu-Kolkata.
According to sources at the Bagdogra airport, private airlines
SpiceJet is set to introduce the service on 16 July.
The only international flight via the airport is between Paro in Bhutan and Bangkok in Thailand operated by Druk Air. This flight operates two days a week.
According to airport officials, the SpiceJet flight would fly three days a week here -- Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“The only international flight via Bagdogra is between Paro and Bangkok. The Kathmandu (Nepal) route is a major development in terms of international air connectivity and tourism. It will help develop the region," airport director KK Bhowmik said.
"The service will continue till 25 October for the summer season," he
said.
However, the flight schedule/permission manager of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), Subhash Jha, said CAAN will take another one week to “fully confirm” the SpiceJet flight to Kathmandu.
“We are presently looking into the airport infrastructure for handling another flight, but we are positive about the SpiceJet proposal, and it is very likely that we will give a green signal to the private airlines after a week,” Mr Jha said over telephone from Kathmandu today.
SpiceJet had also operated night flights from Bagdogra airport from 1 October on experimental
basis.
The night landing facility at the airport was introduced last year.
Meanwhile, the tourism industry is upbeat about the development.
“It was a longstanding demand to connect Bagdogra with neighbouring international capitals like Kathmandu and Dhaka, and also with Malaysia. We came to know that a flight will be introduced between Bagdogra-Kathmandu. We are expecting an increase of around 22-25 % tourists. This will definitely help boost the tourism industry," convener of the Association for Conservation and Tourism, Raj Basu, said.
The Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry, North Bengal secretary Biswajit Das said traders in north Bengal and in Northeast India will benefit from the flight.
"We have been demanding an increase in the number of flights at the Bagdogra airport, both international and domestic, for a long time. The easy communication between Bagdogra and Kathmandu will help the tourism industry, while the volume of business will go up,” he said(sns)
