The day chief minister
Mamata Banerjee arrived on a visit to Uttarkanya, the north Bengal
secretariat here, Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) chief and the chief
executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), Bimal
Gurung, slammed the state government’s role in carrying out rescue
missions for Dawa Wangchu Sherpa, who went missing in an avalanche on
mount Kanchenjungha along with Everester Chhanda Gayen.
Mr Gurung today offered a job to one of Mr Sherpa’s family members and some financial assistance.
The Siliguri Sherpa Bhutia Welfare Centre (SSBWC) had criticized the state government over the matter, while former urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya has sided with the SSBWC.
Mr Gurung said in his Facebook post, “On 24 May, I was the first one to highlight the missing local Sherpa boy from Darjeeling in the avalanche and had urged government compensation.”
He added, “Sadly, till date, there is no response from the government,” Mr Gurung said in his Facebook post.
“The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration has decided to offer a job to a family member of Dawa Wangchu Sherpa,” he added.
He also pointed out that the focus was only on Ms Gayen, and that there was no mention of the two missing Sherpas anywhere.
“The entire world must understand that without the help of the Sherpa community, the key guides in the mountains, it will be nearly impossible for climbers to scale mountains,” Mr Gurung said.
He added, “I will continue to pray for Chhanda Gayen, Dawa Wangchu Sherpa and Mingma Temba
Sherpa.”
The Siliguri Sherpa Bhutia Welfare CentreSSBWC had expressed its unhappiness over the state government’s ‘biased’ attitude at a programme organized by the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority and the Himalayan nature Adventure Foundation to mark the 61st year of the first ascent of Mt Everest and the birth centenary of Tenzing Norgay in Siliguri on 30 May.(EOIC)
