CPM Mirik convener and party worker
union’s Tharbu TG general secretary Kismat Tamang has called on a larger
movement and has urged the TG workers to be ready for agitation similar
to the scale of Margaret Hope agitation in 1955. “TG workers have been
discriminated and left out since decades and the situation have further
deteriorated, with workers even having second thoughts about celebrating
big festivities like dashera and diwali,” Tamang lamented.
He also called on all general public,
students, educated individuals and intellectuals to take part in the
movement to help the TG workers get the wages they deserve. Citing the
example of gate meetings and agitation conducted by 21 TG worker unions
from Hills, Dooars and Terai recently, Tamang said such unified stand
against the TG owners and government is essential in the current
situation. “If we fight for the cause in a unified way, everything can
be achieved,” he observed.
Tamang also urged the TMC-lead worker
union INTTUC to work for the benefit of the workers if it is truly a
union meant for their welfare. “If INTTUC is against the rights of the
workers, it does not have the right to call itself a worker union,”
