Darjeeling alert for Japanese Encephalitis
The Darjeeling district administration has alerted all the departments concerned and asked them to take appropriate measures in view of the killer encephalitis that has spread in north Bengal.
Darjeeling district magistrate Puneet Yadav today held a review meeting over the matter with stakeholders here. At least 24 persons have died so far of the acute encephalitis syndrome in the district, while two died of Japanese Encephalitis. Three persons among them died in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) area, Mr Yadav said.
Officials including those from the district health department, animal resources department, animal husbandry department, administration, SMC, education department attended the meeting.
Of the 24 persons, six died in the Matigara block, six in Naxalbari, three in Phansidewa, three in Kharibari, three in the SMC area and three more in Darjeeling Hills.  A resident of Bijanbari and another person of Siliguri died of Japanese encephalitis.
District chief medical officer of health Dr Subir Bhowmik, who was present in the meeting, said that according to the clinical establishment act, private nursing homes report the health department on the patients suffering from the encephalitis syndrome.
Meanwhile, the health department opened a control room at the office of the deputy deputy chief medical officer of health-II.

"People here can dial this number to know about the disease, the symptoms and other issues. The control room will remain open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m," said deputy chief medical officer of health-II Dr Tulsi Pramanik.
A senior official of the education department said schools have been asked to conduct awareness programmes on the disease.(sns)
