GNLF says GTA unconstitutional running on an unsystematic manner

GNLF rally in Darjeeling demanding Sixth Schedule status
The Gorkha National Liberation Front has said that the present Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), which has “no constitutional guarantee,” is running on an “unsystematic” manner.
The party feels that this is the reason for the GTA chief, Bimal Gurung (said to be of a minister rank), not able to do anything despite the fact that the security facilities he had been enjoying have been snatched away.
Talking to reporters during his party’s pamphlet distribution programme here yesterday, GNLF Kurseong Town committee vice president Durga Pradhan said: “We are not saying that Gorkhaland is not possible, but that the only way to have it is the constitutional sixth schedule status. We have been building a proper way to reach our final destination.”
He claimed that the erstwhile Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) is still alive in the Hills. “This is the reason why, today, we are distributing these leaflets in the town, demanding the restoration of the constitutional DGHC until the sixth schedule status is achieved,” he said.
Mr Pradhan further said his party is soon going to organize a convention on the Sixth Schedule status at different places in the Hills, in which, representatives of different political and non-political organizations, including the GJMM, will be invited.
As part of its plans to make people aware of the “importance” of the DGHC and the Sixth Schedule status for Darjeeling Hills, party activists yesterday distributed the pamphlets in Kurseong town under the leadership of the town president and former vice chairman Sanjay Chettri.
Meanwhile, today, the GNLF Kurseong branch held a meeting at the Gorkha Jan Pustakalay here. The branch spokesperson, Daya Dewan, said the branch committee, consisting 21 members, which was approved and formed on 3 July by party president Subash Ghisingh, got an “official status” today.
Eight other senior GNLF activists have also been selected and they were added today as the ex-officio members of the branch committee.
Mr Dewan claimed that the committee is the first branch committee of the GNLF in the Hills that has been formed with the seven other committees.
GNLF Kurseong branch convenor, Nima Lama, was elected the president of the newly-formed branch committee.
Notably, before the advent of the GJMM, there were branch committees of the GNLF in all the three hill sub-divisions.(sns)
