The
Mamata Banerjee government today inaugurated the seventh Biswa Bangla
store in Darjeeling, under which the state’s handloom and handicraft
products are being promoted and sold. The store in Darjeeling has been
opened at Manjushree, along Nehru Road near Chowrastha, where local
products such as pickle, juice, bed-sheets and shirts made of khadi, and
Kanjeevaram sarees, besides decorative handicrafts, have been put on
display. U. Swaroop, the additional district magistrate, said, “The
chief minister herself opened the BB store from Kolkata today. This is
the second such store in Darjeeling district. The basic aim is to
promote and market local traditional handloom and handicrafts.”
In June, the chief minister inaugurated a BB store at Bagdogra airport in Siliguri. Similar stores have already been opened at Kolkata’s Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport, at the Dakshinapan shopping complex and at the Biswa Bangla Haat in Rajarhat New Town. Homemaker Sarika Subba said the products on display were amazing. “I never knew we had artisans who could craft such beautiful products. The price is a little on the higher side but it is worth a buy,” she said. Plans are also on to open a BB store - as the state government intends to promote Bengal as a brand - in London. (EOIC)
