Darjeeling: As a part of the 105th birth anniversary celebration of Tenzing Norgay, the 1st edition of the Tenzing Norgay Mountain Bike Challenge was successfully organised in Darjeeling on Wednesday, in which women bikers from Nepal stole the show.
Commemorating the birth anniversary of the first Indian man to climb Mt Everest, the event saw a huge footfall. Up to 150 riders of both national and international repute from across India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh attended the event, with the oldest one being 72-year-old Anup Kumar Tokdar.

In the women’s category of the competition, Nepal dominated the show by winning all the top-three places, whereas in men’s category too, a Nepali rider bagged the third place.

Winners – Women Category
Usha Khanal from Nepal – 1st
Nirjala Tamrakar from Nepal – 2nd
Sunee Dolma Shresta from Nepal – 3rd

Winners – Men’s Category
Devendra Thakur from Himachal – 1st
Vittale Bhosale from Maharashtra – 2nd

The bikers took a 68-km-long route from the Himalayan Mountaineering institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, to Air Force Station, Bagora via Chatakpur and back. Passing through the heart of Sinchel Wildlife Sanctuary, the route was gorgeous yet very challenging at the same time.

"This is for the first time that this Mountain Biking Challenge is being organised. Over 150 participants from Nepal and other neighbouring countries participated along with India. In future, we want to make this into an annual calendar event," said Group Captain Jai Kishan, Principal of HMI.
People from all walks of life paid respect to the memorial of Tenzing Norgay within the HMI premises, the spot where he was cremated.
