Support offered

Darjeeling, March 31: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today announced “unconditional” support to the Congress-Trinamul Congress alliance in all north Bengal Assembly constituencies, except the six seats where the party has fielded candidates or is backing other outfits.
“We have decided to extend unconditional support to the TMC-Congress alliance in other seats of north Bengal. Our sole intention is to defeat the Left Front which has been oppressive and insensitive to the hill people,” said Morcha president Bimal Gurung.
The decision is crucial in Siliguri and Naxalbari-Matigara Assembly seats, where the Morcha has a decent support base.
To some extent, the Morcha can influence the contest in the Phansidewa seat also as the party had around 6,000 votes there. Dhupguri, Kumargram and Alipurduar also have small numbers of Morcha sympathisers.
The Morcha has already extended support to the BJP candidate in Madarihat and the People’s Progressive Party in Nagrakata. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong in the hills and Kalchini in the Dooars are the four seats where the party has fielded candidates.
In another development, Bharati Tamang today kicked off her election campaign from the very spot where her husband Madan Tamang had been hacked to death 10 months back.
The 65-year-old ABGL candidate for Darjeeling paid homage to Madan at the memorial at the Upper Clubside stand here and started marching towards the district magistrate’s office with 60-odd supporters to file her nomination.
