Vinod Bhatia flagged off the 1st Vodafone Eastern Mountain Safari (VEMS) 2011

Siliguri (West Bengal), Nov 10 : Lt. Gen. Vinod Bhatia (G.O.C 33 Corps, Indian Army) flagged off the 1st Vodafone Eastern Mountain Safari (VEMS) 2011 organized by Ramakrishna Race Performance Management Pvt. Ltd. (RRPM) here on Thursday

The flag off took place at 7:00 am from Mainak Lodge here.

Also present at the flag off were Arindam Ghosh, Director RRPM and Amittrajit Ghosh, Director, RRPM.

It is the first national car rally held solely in the hills of Eastern India.

The flag off took place after intense vehicle and participant scrutiny that was held on November 9.

Bhatia said, “The route to be covered by these motor-sport enthusiasts is going to be a real tough one and keeping the weather in mind, the fog is going to make the drive really challenging. I wish all the participants to have a great event.”

Explaining the route format and encouraging the participants, Amittrajit Ghosh, Director, RRPM said, “GPS tracker which was introduced by RRPM in Eastern India motor-sports event is used in the hills for the first time in the country in this rally.

"The route is going to be super challenging as some stretches are only used by horses and donkeys and not by vehicles normally. For the first time in Eastern India we are also witnessing participation of Indian Army Team and Tata Motors Team.”

He said, “Out of 24 participants about 13 are from different parts of the country. This is also going to be the toughest rally in Eastern India. We also hope that in future the participation level in Eastern India motor-sports events would increase by leaps and bounds and we would see more enthusiasts from all over the country.”

In 2 days the rally would cover 400kms split into 2 legs (10hours drive each day) in the hills of North Bengal.

Traveling in and around Siliguri and its neighboring mountain ranges, the rally will once again follow the exciting trend of GPS time controls along with the Standard Time Controls and Self Time Controls, a format introduced by RRPM, which has been widely accepted and appreciated by all competitors after its successful introduction in the previous event, the Rally de Sea View.

Teams from different parts of the country would number to 25 and cars to be seen in the hills would be modified Mitsubishi Cedia, Maruti Esteem, Tata Xenon, Safari and Grande and the Maruti Gypsy.

These specially prepared cars would be driven by eminent motorists like Somdeb Chanda (Kolkata), Sachin Singh (Hyderabad), Karthik Maruthi (Erode), Raj Singh Rathore (New Delhi), Anthony (Bangalore), Asish Budhia (Jharkand) and others from all over the Country.
