Kurseong: Drinking water crisis in Hills

KURSEONG, 24 FEB: In the past several days the shortage of drinking water has worsened in Kurseong, indicating there might be a real problem in the upcoming dry season.
The drinking water shortage here has grown worse each year, despite promises from the public health engineering department and the local municipality. Recently, the problem has spiked in many wards.
The root causes of the problem are a set supply of water, a rapidly increasing number of holdings in the town, and damaged, leaking supply lines. With insufficient supplies available, there are allegations that the distribution system is unsystematic and unequal.
A resident of Ward 12, Mr. Ashok Chettri, said the water connection he used to use has been dry for the past few days. All his efforts to get help from the municipality have failed.
Another resident of Kurseong said he used to get water from the municipality on every second day, for one hour.
But for the last few days, the supply time has been reduced to a matter of minutes. He said this doesn't give him enough time to gather sufficient water for his family. Another resident of Kurseong believes the so-called "scarcity" is manufactured to benefit certain parties. Several public water-hydrant connections are being misused, and the concerned authorities should take immediate steps to curb illegal water connections, the resident said.
When questioned, Kurseong municipality water department councillor Subash Pradhan said measures have been taken by the municipality to curb the illegal drinking water connections, and to increase the overall supply of drinking water to the town.
