“Shyamal report has been insensitive to the long standing, genuine and constitutional aspirations of the Gorkhas”- GTF GTF submits memo to the CM opposing High Power Committee report

Protesting against the report of High Power Committee, the Gorkhaland Task Force (GTF) under the leadership of its President, Rev Dr Anos Das Pradhan submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee through the ADM, Gopal Lama. During the submission, the GTF President was also accompanied by the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) General Secretary, Sukhman Moktan, GTF Coordinator, R Moktan, Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxist (CPRM) working President, LM Lama, CPRM Secretary, Taramani Rai and CPRM President Kishor Pradhan, Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) Vice President, Lachuman Pradhan and Gorkha Rashtriya Nirman Morcha (GRNM) President, Dawa Lama. The memorandum mentions, “The GTF maintains that the aspirations of the Indian Gorkhas can only be met by the creation of the separate state of Gorkhaland that would include the entire district of Darjeeling and the whole region of Dooars.”Asserting that they are dismayed by the recommendation of only 5 mouzas, the memorandum further notifies that the report has been insensitive to the long standing, genuine and constitutional aspiration of more than 1 crore Indian Gorkhas who wish to see the creation of the state of Gorkhaland established covering the district of Darjeeling and the entire region of Dooars. Lastly, the memorandum asserts, “The GTF vehemently rejects the report of the committee which makes an attempt to show Gorkha population in Dooars and Terai as minority and reiterates its resolve to continue working towards meeting the aspirations of the Gorkhas for the inclusion of the entire Dooars region with the district of Darjeeling in the creation of Gorkhaland.”                                                   Providing further information Sukhman Moktan stated that the report is humiliating for all the Gorkhas who have been staying all over India. The Shyamal Committee report has tried to show that the Gorkhas are a minor community in Dooars. “We were never in favour of GTA, all we want is a separate state i.e. Gorkhaland,” he asserted. The GTF’s R Moktan adding on Sukhman Moktan’s statement said that Gorkhaland is the dream of all the people residing in the Darjeeling District and Dooars.
R Moktan further giving an account of the region’s history informed that the book by AJ Dash named ‘The Bengal District Gazetters’ records that, “The District was part of the dominions of the Raja of Sikkim. The district was included in the Rajashahi Division until October 1905 when, as a result of the partition of Bengal, it was transferred to the Bhagalpur Division. With the re- arrangement of the provinces it was re- transferred to the Rajashahi Division in March 1912.” As per the information document titled ‘Gorkhaland Agitation’ published by the West Bengal Government in the year 1986, it mentions, “Historically, what is known as the district of Darjeeling today was parts of two kingdoms during the pre- British period- the kingdoms of Sikkim and Bhutan. Following wars and treaties signed with these two kingdoms, this territory came under control of the British Empire in India.”
