Inclusion protest

Siliguri, June 13.TT: The Dooars Terai Joint Action Committee today said it would bring out a rally of 1 lakh supporters in Siliguri tomorrow to dissuade the government from including any mouza from the plains in the hill set-up.

Committee representatives, who belong to different organisations and parties including the Adivasi Vikas Parishad, Intuc and KPP, said tomorrow’s programme would be one of the largest agitation by the forum so far.

“We will assemble over 1 lakh people in Siliguri tomorrow and march to the office of the north Bengal development minister near Siliguri Junction,” said Aloke Chakravorty, the Darjeeling district Intuc president and one of the frontline leaders of the committee.

“Our committee opposes in principal the inclusion of even an inch of plains land in the GTA and we still adhere to it. Tomorrow, we will submit a memorandum to the chief minister and to minister Gautam Deb.”

Sources said since the chief minister was scheduled to meet the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders on June 16, the committee wanted to keep up the pressure so that no more mouzas were included in the GTA to satisfy the hill party.

Formally, the committee will demand that even the five mouzas recommended by the Justice Shyamal Sen panel should not be included in the GTA.
