NGOs educate students on the 2nd largest crime in the world-human trafficking

An informative and awareness programme on human trafficking was organized by the NGO Glen Family Foundation with the help of MARG, Darjeeling and Darjeeling Police at St. Philomena School today. The Kalimpong ASP, Songmit Lepcha presided over as the chief guest while the resource person was Nirnay John Chettri, Coordinator, MARG.Chettri explained at length to the students that how the youths fall prey to human trafficking, which is regarded as the 2nd largest crime in the world. Through a slide show, Chettri showed the pictures of the active human traffickers in the region. Real life stories of girls who has fallen victim to this crime were also narrated. Chettri said that the traffickers are in search of those unemployed youths especially females who are in search of jobs and added that such individuals decoy the girls by offering god jobs in cities and finally shove them into prostitution.Further he said that in order to stop the sale of human by other humans, the Police, media, drivers, hoteliers, parents, guardians, youths and every individual needs to be aware. He also appealed the parents and the guardians to keep a close check on the activities of their children.Likewise, ACP Lepcha in her address said that due to the fewer ratios of the Police in the country, it becomes easy to trap people. Sharing her work experience, Lepcha said that in her life she has come across numerous cases of human trafficking. In most of the cases it was found that the families of the victims are scared to support him/ her thinking of their prestige in the society. She also informed that any of the missing reports after 15 days are transformed into kidnapping cases.Later the students were also shown an episode of Crime Patrol based on an incident of Darjeeling. An interactive session was also held during which the students enquired about the topic.
