The ‘ghar bhitra janta’ programme called by the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee in demand of a Gorkhaland state witnessed a total shutdown in the Darjeeling Hills today. The Calcutta High Court had adjudged the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s ‘janta curfew’ and bandhs as unconstitutional and the GJAC had announced the agitation of ‘people remaining indoors’ to avert further confrontation with the court.

People in the Hills of late have been welcoming any strategy in their zeal for separate statehood. The ‘ghar bhitra janta’ call was fully supported by everyone. The day passed off peacefully with no untoward incident being reported from Kalimpong. The entire town wore a deserted look the whole day as virtually no one ventured out of their homes.

However, the SDO office was open and a few ambulances and army vehicles plied during the day. The police had tightened security to avert any unrest, while two companies of the CRPF were also stationed at several places in town.

The day-long ‘ghar bhitra janta’ or ‘people remaining indoors’ agitation called by the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee was a complete success in Mirik, with the entire town wearing a desolate look as happens during regular shutdowns.

But during the course of the day, the Mirik police arrested a well-known contractor named Taken Zimba. Police sources said Zimba has been accused of providing financial support to the parties backing the ongoing protests in demand of statehood. He has been charged under IPC sections 143, 144, 145, 186, 353, 506 and 12013. The sources also informed that Zimba is to be transferred to Kurseong police station on Tuesday(EOI)
