Darjeeling Toy train services yet to resume in landslide-affected areas

Darjeeling toy train - The himalayan railway
Kurseong, 26 December: Even though the frequent trial run of the toy train between Tindharia to Ghayabari has been initiated for more than one week now, the affected services are yet to be resumed at the landslide-affected routes and areas of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR).
Importantly, after a gap of more than four years, recently several points in the landslide-affected toy train routes have been reconstructed and re-planted between Tindharia to Ghayabari and even trial runs have been initiated at the same routes.
Not only this there had been reports that by 25 December the inaugural ceremony of the toy train service between the same routes would be formally done at the Mahatma Gandhi Hall in Tindharia.
But such reports have not turned into reality so far and only the trial runs
have been continuing without any light of the resumption of the toy train in sight.
The DHR, Director, Mr M Bhutia, said that it is right that trial runs have been initiated between the Tindharia and Ghayabari railway route but so far no any official announcements have been made by the department regarding its resumption and its inauguration as some process are yet to be completed.
When asked regarding the train services between Kurseong to Mahanadi railway station, Mr Bhutia   informed that efforts are on by the department to resume services in the said route within two to three months.
Even if on both points and distances the toy train services are to be resumed, the toy train lovers will still be disappointed as direct journey of the toy train service between plains to Hills will not be possible as 14th Mile landslide-affected areas are yet to be reconstructed fully and no one knows when it will be completed.
A senior railway official said that the reconstruction works of the road (National Highway) has not been completed fully at the landslide-affected areas at 14 Mile, Ghayabari, hence it will take more time for the resumption of direct toy train services in the Hills. However, efforts are on by the NHAI and the DHR.
Notably, since 14 June 2010, the direct toy train services between NJP to Kurseong have been interrupted due to frequent landslides that occurred on NH-55 at 14 Mile, Ghayabari in Kurseong sub-division area.

Even though the frequent trial run of the toy train between Tindharia to Ghayabari has been initiated for more than one week now, the affected services are yet to be resumed at the landslide-affected routes and areas of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR).
