Chandan Mitra, Babul Supriyo get BJP tickets from West Bengal
KOLKATA: After Trinamool Congress, it was BJP's turn on Saturday to spring some surprises for West Bengal in its second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls. Among those given tickets from the state are journalist and Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra, retired IPS officer R K Handa, actors Nimu Bhowmik and Joy Banerjee and singer Babul Supriyo.
BJP has now announced candidates for 34 of Bengal's 42 constituencies. The party isn't aspiring to win too many seats in the state, but has the capability of affecting the chances of candidates from other parties. The state leadership is happy with the selection of Chandan Mitra as a candidate from Hooghly.
Chandan Mitra will have to contend against Trinamool Congress' Ratna De Nag, who won the seat by nearly 75,000 votes in 2009. The Singur assembly segment falls within the Hooghly constituency and may throw up some surprises as the imbroglio over the small-car factory here has remained unresolved even after seven years.

"My family belongs to Hooghly town. I have studied in schools there. Even today, when I visit Bengal, I stay at Hooghly. It is but natural that I should contest from the Hooghly constituency. My pitch will be the lack of development in Bengal. I shall tell people how the state can progress with Narendra Modi at the Centre," Mitra said. An alumnus of La Martiniere School in Kolkata, St Stephen's College, Delhi and Oxford University,the59-year-oldjournalisthasbeen a Rajya Sabha MPsince 2003.

Veteran actor Nimu Bhowmik is happy to have been picked to contest from Raiganj. Claiming to be a 'son of the soil' he said, "I have received a lot and this is the time to return something to society. My mother contributed a lot to Raiganj. She was known as 'Raiganj er amma' till she passed away at the age of 105." Bhowmik has a tough fight on his hands against Deepa Das Munshi of Congress,Md Salim of Left Front. Trinamool has fielded Deepa's brother-in-law Satya Ranjan Das Munshi from the seat.

Singer Babul Supriyo said : "I didn't tell the party that I wish to contest from Asansol but when I found the name in the list, I selected it. Even those in the industry suggested that I contest the elections from there. I think it is an interesting place.Ihavebeen there anditis not alien to me," hesaid. (TOI)
