Judge Santanu Mishra read out the sentence to Bhim Kumar Subba (42) and also directed him to pay a fine of Rs10,000 failing which the sentence would be extended by two more years.
According to public prosecutor Pranay Rai, the incident occurred on April 24, 2011 in Chota Hatta under the Lhodoma police station.
"On that fateful night, the accused beat up his wife Prem Diki Sherpa in an intoxicated state with a wooden bar and then attacked her with a khukuri in front of their nine-year-old daughter. Sherpa died the following day," said Rai.
The PP said Subba was a farmer and a habitual drinker who would regularly beat up his wife and even his young daughter on small pretexts.
The deceased's father, Nima Sherpa, had filed an FIR against his son-in-law at the Lhodoma police station on April 25, 2011 and Subba was arrested the same day.
He was initially sent to judicial custody after being booked under Section 498A of the IPC on the count of torturing his wife, and was judged guilty of murder under Section 302.
Rai added 16 witnesses had deposed before the court against Subba, including his daughter, Niru. (EOIC)
