The Higher Education Department of the
Gorkhaland Territorial Administration is likely to restart the
construction of an additional block for housing class rooms and an
auditorium in Kurseong College. The construction of the additional block
had started in 2007 with financial assistance from then Rajya Sabha MP
and CPM leader Saman Pathak.
Kurseong College had plans for an
additional block to include courses such as BCA, BBA, Mass Communication
and Computer Science in 2007. But a financial crunch put to waste the
plans until Pathak stepped in to help. He reportedly gave Rs5 lakh for
the new block from his MP LAD fund.
The foundation stone had been laid by
former urban development minister Ashok Bhattacharya, but work had to be
suspended due to lack of funds and political turmoil. After seven years
now, the project is expected to go ahead with the help of the GTA.
Kurseong College principal Prabhat
Pradhan acknowledged that GTA education department chief RB Bhujel has
assured the college the project will be restarted and his department
will give Rs32 lakh.(EOIC)
