The toy train service between Kurseong
to Mahanadi finally resumed today after a gap of about four years.
Landslides on June 14, 2010 had brought the train service between
Kurseong and Mahanadi to a halt and since then the Darjeeling Hill
Railway had been working rigorously to resume the service.
The mark the occasion, two engines, a
diesel and a steam one, travelled the 7km route from Kurseong to
Mahanadi. The trains were decorated with flowers, while a group of
students from an NGO and foreign tourists enjoyed the resumed ride.
DHR director MD Bhutia said the toy
train service, 52544 Down, from Darjeeling to Kurseong, will now be
extended to Mahanadi and after Mahanadi, it will return back to Kurseong
and travel up to Darjeeling.
In January, the DHR had also resumed the
train services between Tindharia to Ghayabari, a route that had
remained non-functional for more than three years due to landslides near
the Tindharay Railway Workshop.(EOIC)
