Two persons were killed Tuesday night
when their vehicle met with an accident on NH55 and fell about 100ft.
down a cliff near Sepoydhura in Kurseong sub-division area.
Police said a Swaraj Mazda truck
(WB-73C-0237) loaded with PDS rice was proceeding towards Darjeeling
from Siliguri when the accident occurred, killing both the driver and
his assistant on the spot.
Personnel from the Kurseong fire brigade
retrieved the bodies and sent them to the Kurseong sub-divisional
hospital around 1:30am for postmortem.
The driver has been identified as Kewal
Tamang (23), a resident of Teen Mile near Jorbungalow, while his helper,
Pravin Gurung (23), was a resident of Sikhsingh Forest Busty near Teen
Mile.
The actual cause of the accident is yet
to be ascertained, but as the road size where the mishap occurred is
very narrow and interspersed with sharp bends, it is being conjectured
the driver may have lost control as he was speeding. A tree at the spot
has also been uprooted, while bags filled with rice were found scattered
all over the area.(EOIC)
