CM to hold administrative meeting in Darjeeling next week amid tension over arrest orders

Amid tension over the warrants issued for the arrest of senior leaders of the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha (GJMM) in the Madan Tamang murder case, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is going to hold an administrative meeting in Darjeeling next week.

It has been learnt that Banerjee will attend an administrative meeting there on 17 June and the next day she will attend another meeting to discuss several issues pertaining to the tribal people in the hill areas.

A Kolkata court has issued arrest warrants against the entire top leadership of the GJMM including supremo and Gorkhaland Territorial Council head Mr Bimal Gurung.

The case is related to the murder of All India Gorkha League (AIGL) president Madan Tamang, who was stabbed to death in Darjeeling on May 21, 2010.

The CBI, which is probing the case, on 29 May 2015 submitted a chargesheet indicting 23 people, including Bimal Gurung, of various offences including murder and criminal conspiracy.

A senior official said that security will be beefed up to avoid any untoward incident during the stay of the chief minister in Darjeeling.

Meanwhile, the widow of the slain leader, Bharati Tamang, has threatened to go on a hunger strike if any of the leaders of the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha accused of murdering her husband are granted bail.

After the issue of the arrest warrants, GJMM MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri has not been attending the Assembly sessions.

To avoid any untoward incident, deployment of security in hill areas has been doubled since the issue of arrest warrants.

Banerjee will reach Richmond Hill in Darjeeling on 17 June and stay there. She will leave Darjeeling on 19 June to attend the meeting of the North Bengal development department at Uttarkanya.

An official source said that Banerjee will also hold meetings in several other places in North Bengal including Malda, South and North Dinajpur. She will reach Malda on 14 June to attend an administrative meeting. Another administrative meeting could be held either at Raiganj or Balurghat on 15 or 16 June. On 16 June she will arrive in Siliguri. North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb confirmed her visit to Darjeeling.(sns Kolkata)
