Speculation over the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (Medical) has finally came to an end. Immediately after taking charge, minister of state (health) Sashi Panja held meetings with the authorities at Swasthya Bhavan on Monday and decided to hold the exam on July 20.
Monday's decision may have come as a relief for 75,862 candidates but they are still a worried lot. With the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test ( NEET II ) scheduled on July 24, many medical aspirants feel it would be difficult to shift focus from one exam to another in a gap of three days.
"It is sheer waste of time and money. Initially, we were preparing for WBJEE and it suddenly got scrapped. So we started to prepare for NEET II, which I had no plans to apply for. To ensure a better chance, I even enrolled in a specialized coaching class with a lump sum money. And now again, I hear that WBJEE will be held on July 20. So, NEET II does not remain as important as it would have been otherwise," said a candidate.
Sunil Agarwal, centre director of Aakash Institute, however, had a word of encouragement. "WBJEE will be immediately followed by NEET II. I believe there will be a change in the pattern of question between the two examinations. The students need to focus on the syllabus only," he added.
The WBJEE board has decided to hold the medical test even in states like Tripura and Assam, much on the lines of the engineering exam. "The number of centres for engineering was 323. In case of medical, however, the numbers will reduce. The remaining rules and regulations will remain the same," said WBJEE board chairman Sajal Dasgupta. According to sources in the board, new set of question papers will be prepared for physics and chemistry.
The results will be published after two weeks of the exam. "We shall start the process of counselling from the second week of August. The classes shall begin from September. This year, due to unavoidable circumstances, the classes across 16 medical colleges will start a month later,' a senior health department officer added.(TOI)
