The toll from violence during
and after the panchayat polls rose to 26 with at least seven more deaths
being reported on Tuesday. Details of the seven deaths follow:
Name: Pranab Biswas, 35
Place: Duttapulia in Dhantala, Nadia
Party link: Trinamul’s former gram panchayat member, the husband of a current candidate.
How: A mob of
around 300 suspected BJP supporters attacked his residence on Tuesday
morning for his alleged role in the capture of booths on Monday and
lynched him.
Names: Gokul Meikup, 45, and Gokul Barui, 35
Place: Arjun Nagar in Bhupatinagar, East Midnapore
Party link: The Opposition alleged they were Trinamul workers, but the ruling party denied it.
How: An accidental explosion killed the duo while they were allegedly making bombs, along with others, in a fishery on Monday night.
Name: Gour Sarkar, 67
Place: Bogram in Raiganj, North Dinajpur
Party link: A man with no known political affiliation
How: Sarkar’s
body was found in a bush on Tuesday morning after he went for a walk.
His family has alleged that he was murdered by Trinamul for defying the
local leadership and casting his vote.
Name: Jinnahtul Haque, 30
Place: Suktabari in Cooch Behar
Party link: Dissident Trinamul worker
How: He was
injured critically in a clash between supporters of the ruling party’s
youth wing and the parent organisation on Monday. He succumbed to
his injuries in a hospital on Tuesday morning.
Name: Jullur Rahman, 50
Place: Durgapur of Tapan, South Dinajpur
Party link: Trinamul supporter
How: He
sustained critical injuries in a clash between Trinamul and RSP members
and was rushed to the Malda Medical College. He succumbed to his
injuries on Tuesday morning
Name: Sushil Das, 45
Place: Joshur in Habra, North 24-Parganas
Party link: Trinamul supporter
How: A
clash broke out between supporters of the BJP and Trinamul after
Sushil had allegedly arrived with others to a booth on Monday. He was
beaten up with bamboo sticks and admitted to the Barasat District
Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
