Sikkim Pragya Prtishthan on Wednesday celebrated the 167th birth
anniversary of Padri Ganga Prasad Pradhan, the first Gorkha journalist
and writer of Gorkhali text books, including the translation of the
Bible in the Gorkhali/Nepali language.
Renowned engineer of Sikkim Kiran Rasaily presided over the birth anniversary as the chief guest. Dramatist C. L. Ghimery, Thamanau Bagh and Sahitya Academy award winner (Child Literature ) Bhim Dahal attended the event on the day as guests of honour. A number of litterateurs also attended the event of the day.
During the welcome address Bhim Rawat, Convenor Sikkim Pragya Prtishthan briefed about the life of Padri Ganga Prasad Pradhan, recalling the timeless contributions made by him to Gorkha literature. He said: “Bhanu Bhakta Acharya was the first Nepali poet and translator of the Ramayana into Nepali language. Likewise, Padri Ganga Prasad Pradhan was the pioneer of the ‘Gorkha printing press’ and editor of ‘Gorkhey Khabar’ in Darjeeling. He also translated the Bible into Gorkhali language. Hence, all Gorkha people should celebrate his birthday annually. We should not forget that Ganga Prasad gave birth to Gorkha journalism in the region.”
Chief Guest Kiran Rasaily said: 'Now the youth should come forward to take responsibility to conduct programmes like this. This event is actually like the transferring of the baton. Now youths should come forward and remember the great man.”(EOIC)
