Sharda Rai Subba expelled from the TMC party
DARJEELING: Sharda Rai Subba, the in-charge of the women’s wing of the Trinamul Congress (Hills), was expelled from the party for anti-party activities after she refused to withdraw her candidature as an independent for the Darjeeling Assembly by-poll slated for May 19.
A press release issued by senior Trinamul leader Arup Biswas said the disciplinary committee of the party was expelling Subba for six years for repeatedly indulging in anti-party activities. “The party clearly states that it has no connection with her in any respect and will not take any responsibility of any kind of illegal activities committed by her,” he said.
Subba had said she was contesting the election as an independent since the Trinamul cadres were not happy with the party’s decision to support Morcha leader Binay Tamang, who, too, is contesting as an independent.
Subba had contested from the same seat in the last Assembly election in 2016 as a Trinamul candidate and had lost to the undivided Morcha’s Amar Singh Rai. She had secured 45,473 votes against Rai’s 95,386 votes.
The by-poll was necessitated following the resignation of Rai, who had contested the recently-held Lok Sabha election as Trinamul candidate from Darjeeling.
Reacting to her expulsion, Subba said she was not surprised at all. "I knew I would either be expelled from the party or some kind of action taken against me. So, all I want to say is I welcome the decision," she said.
Subba said she has formed an apolitical body called Darjeeling Gorkha Parvatiya Jan Adhikar Manch, and she would campaign on its platform. She said the organization will remain even after the election and it would engage in social work. The organization, she said, has 21 members and she is its convenor.
She also appealed to the people to contribute to her campaign since she was short of funds.
L. B. Rai, the president of Trinamul (Hills), welcomed the expulsion of Subba. “The entire TMC cadres are with us and her contesting will not affect the TMC party here,” he said.
