Guwahati: The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP) during
its 20th National Council Meet 2020 held in Guwahati on February 15-16
resolved that Gorkhas in Assam should be recognised as an indigenous
community to ensure that its constitutional and land rights are
protected.

youth president Nanda Kirati Dewan during a press conference in
Guwahati on Wednesday said that it has called on the government of Assam
to identify Gorkhas of the state as an indigenous community.
"Gorkhas are an indigenous Indian community, throughout India Gorkhas exist, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, to Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, so we cannot remain indigenous in some state, and non-indigenous in some state. The identification of indigenous cannot be identified on a base year, it should be solely on the identity," said Dewan.
So overall the idea of identifying indigenous when it is implemented in Assam, the Gorkhas should be included, this is one of our resolutions, he added.
The newly elected president of BGP, Assam, Prakash Dahal said that since Gorkhas don't have a homeland in India, as such, we must be recognised across the country so that constitutional rights including land rights of Gorkhas are protected everywhere.
Secondly, the council also resolved to welcome the recently signed Bodoland Peace Accord and expressed faith that the land rights of the Gorkhas in the region will be ensured as in the pre- BTR time.
The council also requested the government of India to ensure that Gorkha certificates when issued are channelised properly.
"We have constituted a committee headed by Col (retd) Jeevan Kumar Chettri, who is the president of Uttarakhand state committee of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha, he will submit a report within 6 months and through this report, we will tell the defence ministry and government of India and all authorities concerned to ease the mechanism of issuing Gorkha certificate and also a proper mechanism so that it is uniformly done," added Dewan.
