GUWAHATI: The All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) has urged Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to take immediate measures for a permanent solution to the boundary row with Meghalaya at Langpih.
An AAGSU delegation submitted a memorandum in this regard to the chief minister at the Assam Administrative Staff College here on Saturday, demanding land security and protection of the residents of the area.
“The inter-state boundary issue in the Langpih (Lampi in Assam) region has not been resolved for decades now with several land disputes arising between the residents of the area. As a result, villagers have been at the receiving end and harassed from time to time,” the union’s president, Arjun Chetry stated in the memorandum.
The union expressed resentment over the alleged inaction of the state government and the Kamrup district administration to resolve the boundary issue despite repeated appeals by various organisations.
It may be mentioned that Langpih had, among other incidents, witnessed violence in 2008 (triggering casualties and injuries) and 2018.
The union further alleged that two villagers who were engaged in road repair were on August 13 roughed up and harassed by authorities from Meghalaya, following which AAGSU representatives along with members of two other organisations, visited the area and sought protection of the residents from the local administration.
AAGSU had even threatened to stage an indefinite economic blockade in the area to block trade if no measures were taken within three days of the incident.
“However, with the administration intervening and assuring measures soon, the blockade has been kept on hold for now,” Chetry told The Shillong Times on Sunday.
He further said that the chief minister on Saturday assured to look into the union’s demand for a permanent solution to the inter-state boundary problem at Langpih.
