Congress leader, SSB jawans including eight women arrested under Immoral Trafficking Act near North Bengal Medical College

Siliguri, Sep 8: A Congress leader, two SSB jawans along with nine others, including eight women, have been arrested under Immoral Trafficking Act from a hotel in a midnight raid at Matighara near here, police said today.
Subrata Kundu alias Bura, the local Congress president of Matighara, two jawans of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), eight women, aged between 15 and 40, and a civilian were caught red handed from the hotel, adjacent to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital following the raid with specific information, Additional Superintendent of Police (Siliguri) Amit P Jawalgi told reporters.
Those arrested will be produced before a local court today.
The police raid came after the local people have been agitating recently about the proliferation of the sex trade and other immoral acts in dhabas and hotels in and around Siliguri and Jalpaiguri.
Even many residential areas were not spared by the ''new type of business people,'' said a resident of Sevoke Road.
Recently, the local residents stonned and ransacked a hotel at Sevoke Road for prostitution. Two people were also arrested from the hotel.
Meanwhile, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri administrations have banned singing and dancing in the bars with effect from today.
The decision came after a high-level meeting, chaired by North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb, with the police officials of the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri and many hotel managers.
The meeting decided that all bars where dance and singing are performed after sun down should be stopped with immediate effect.
The ban would continue upto October 28.
