West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today left for Darjeeling to attend the swearing-in of the newly elected Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) tomorrow.
Union Home Minister SushilKumar Shinde would also arrive at Darjeeling this evening to attend the GTA swearing-in ceremony, according to official sources.
Sources here today said prior to the swearing-in of the GTA, the chief minister is likely to meet Mr Shinde tonight to discuss the overall security situation of the country.
Ms Banerjee's relation with Mr Shinde's predecessor P Chidambaram had its share of chill over the proposed National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and security operations against Maoists in Jangalmahal.
Mr Shinde had called up Ms Banerjee yesterday to inform that he had cancelled all his programmes in Maharashtra tomorrow and would reach Darjeeling by this evening.
Earlier, the Union Home Minister had cited his prior engagements in Maharashtra and wanted his deputy to go to Darjeeling to attend the GTA swearing-in ceremony.
According to some political observers, Mr Shinde's gesture would help in improving relation between Congress-led UPA and its ally Trinamool Congress.
While the Centre is keen to see peace and stability in the geo-politically sensitive Darjeeling, the Chief Minister also projects the Darjeeling truce as a major achievement of her government.
Incidentally, Trinamool Congress had earlier withdrawn its candidates in the GTA election. (UNI)
