Siliguri, 28 April: The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) leadership is preparing to contest
the upcoming three-tier rural polls of the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad in
Darjeeling district scheduled to be held in June.
The GJMM may strike an alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a splinter group of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad led by John Barla, and the Kamtapur People’s Party (KPP).
Though the GJMM has also decided to keep open the idea of an alliance with the mainstream political parties associated with national politics, the party said it would not go with the Trinamul Congress in the rural polls. The decision was taken in Siliguri yesterday after the GJMM chief, Bimal Gurung, met party leaders from the Terai region. The leaders discussed the party’s three-point agenda, including the organizational position and preparations for the Mahakuma Parishad polls.
Mr Gurung also reviewed the post-Lok Sabha poll situation in the Terai region and prospects of the BJP candidate SS Ahluwalia in the Darjeeling constituency.
The GJMM leadership in the Terai region reviewed the voting pattern of the Nepali speaking people spread over nearly 187 polling stations. According to a senior GJMM leader, 70 % of the total voters in 187 booths cast their votes in favour of the GJMM-backed BJP candidate Mr Ahluwalia. The remaining votes were divided among the other political parties, including the CPI-M, Congress and the Trinamul Congress, the leader said. “We will keep a close watch on the political situation after the general election results. We need to observe the position of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress,” the co-coordinator of the GJMM’s Terai region, Shankar Adhikari, said.“For now, it was decided that the GJMM would contest the rural polls under the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad and make an alliance with the JMM, KPP and other national parties. We need to keep open a way to make an understanding with the BJP and the Congress for the polls,” Mr Adhikari said.
Asked about the Congress, Mr Adhikari said: “We must make an alliance with the BJP. But we would go with the Congress in areas where the BJP has no base.” “The GJMM will not field candidates in all the nine Mahakuma Parishad seats,” Mr Adhikari said.
Notably, the SMP was under the control of the Left Front, and the Trinamul Congress, after coming to power, captured it after the CPI-M member and the sahakari sabhadhipati joined the ruling party.(SNS)
