Siliguri
is set to witness its first ever Mrs Tourism Siliguri 2016 fashion
contest to boost tourism and provide an opportunity for married women to
walk on the ramp and showcase their talent. The event will be held
during the three-day World Tourism Day Festival at City Centre, Siliguri
starting from October 1.
The contest was envisoned by local designer Alka Sharma in partnership with the Inter National Institute of Fashion Designing (INIFD), Siliguri. The show will comprise three rounds where a panel of five judges will evaluate the contestants on their intelligence, appearance and other criteria.
Alka Sharma said, "The idea is to boost tourism and promote local culture and tradition along while providing a platform for married women to have a peek into the world of glamour."
She said married women up to 50 years of age can register themselves for the contest. The contestants will have to walk the ramp wearing traditional dresses.
Once the registration process is complete, INIFD (Siliguri) head Kuntanil Das will groom the contestants. Das, a well known face in the fashion avenues of north Bengal, appreciated Alka's idea to boost the morale of married women who usually do not get an opportunity to participate in such events.
"This will be a memorable day for Siliguri, where married women will do their bit to boost the region's tourism sector," he said.
Pramila Pradhan, Bindu Dahal and Gayatri Chhetri were among those who have registered themselves and they said they are excited to participate irrespective of who would win the title.
Raj Basu, convener of ACT, said, "Now fashion shows and contests have become a part of tourism. Alka's idea will definitely support women, especially from the rural belt, to become self reliant and confident."
Organising committee members have informed that interested married women can register themselves by September 20 by contacting 9564201763.(TT)
