A team from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has
arrested two persons and seized three gold bars, each weighing 1kg, from
Sevoke Bazar, around 25km from here, last night.
The arrested, Anwar Hussain, a resident of Dalsingpara, and Mominur
Islam of Mechi Busty in Jaigaon, both in Alipurduar district, are
suspected to have plans to smuggle the gold bars into Nepal, sources
said.
The DRI officials scrutinised the seized bars and found that the bars
are of 24-carat gold engraved with the words "Switzerland Metalor". The
price of the seized gold, sources said, is over Rs 95 lakh.
"The DRI officials suspect that the gold has been
smuggled first into Bhutan from China and then to India through
somewhere near India-Bhutan border in Alipurduar. From there, the duo
carried the contraband to Siliguri and were supposed to hand it to some
people who would take it to Nepal," a source said.(TT)
