GJM to restart stir for CBI probe into Sibchu firing

DARJEELING: With renewed confidence after a good show in the just-concluded assembly elections, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) will restart its agitation for a CBI inquiry into the Sibchu firing that killed three supporters in February.
GJM chief Bimal Gurung said the Bharatiya Bhutpurva Gorkha Sainik Morcha (BBGSM), the Gorkhaland Personnel (GLP), the Gorkha Janmukti Vidhyarti Morcha (GJVM) and other frontal organizations will start the agitation that was kept on hold because of the elections.
The GJM will organize a victory celebration in the Hills on May 19 and resume its agitation soon after. "The elections were a compulsion. Since they are over, we will restart our agitation," said GJM chief Bimal Gurung .

On February 8, police allegedly opened fire on GJM supporters while they were taking part in a padyatra and a dharna at Sibchu in Jalpaiguri district, leaving three people dead. The GJM retaliated by burning down government properties.

"Our agitation will continue till our demand for a CBI inquiry is fulfilled," Gurung said. The stir is expected to start from Sibchu to symbolize the indiscriminate police firing and will spread across the Hills.

The GJM's decision to resume its agitation will cause worry to the new government in the state. Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee has already expressed her opposition to any division of Bengal. At the same time, she has promised to find a solution to the hill crisis within three months.

The GJM supported the Trinamool-Congress alliance in the plains of North Bengal. "We will try to initiate talks with the Trinamool to know their views on the Gorkhaland demand. Only then will we chalk out our future strategies," Gurung said after his party won the elections.
