Terai Dooars News- Progressive Tea Workers Union (PTWU) call for agitation

Siliguri, Aug 11: The Progressive Tea Workers Union (PTWU), affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya Adibashi Vikash Parishad (ABAVP), today called for a series of agitations, including strike in the tea gardens of Terai and Dooars, demanding hike in the wages for lakhs of platation workers.
Work in the tea estates in the districts of Darjeeling's Terai region and Dooars in Jalpaiguri suffered for the second day today following strike called by jointly Coordination Committee of Tea Plantation Workers and Defence Commitee for Plantation Workers Rights for wage hike.
They also called a general strike in north Bengal tomorrow to this issue.
The PTWU called strike in the tea gardens of Terai and Dooars on August 17 and 18 and genral stike for 72 hours in north Bengal from August 22.
ABAVP president John Baxla said they would not go for any reconciliation meeting with the planters unless the latter raise minimum wage to Rs 100 per day for tea workers.
The tea workers now get Rs 67 per day for their minimum eight hours work.
