All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) reacted to the Indo-Bangla land swap deal

PTI/September 14: The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) has sharply reacted to the Indo-Bangla land swap deal "wherein Assam had to surrender more than 288 lakh sq ft land to neighbouring Bangladesh. The AAGSU leaders have slammed the UPA-led government at the Centre and the Congress government in
the state for the Indo-Bangladesh land pact signed recently in Dhaka during the prime minister's visit there.
Coming down heavily on chief minister Tarun Gogoi, AAGSU information and publicity secretary Nanda Kirati Dewan said, "thousands of indegenous Assamese people are losing land every day due to flood and erosion in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts of Assam."
"The governments have shown no interest in giving adequate relief and rehabilitation to the affected people whereas (they) readily agreed to give large stretches of land to Bangladesh without even discussing it in the Assembly or in the cabinet," Dewan who was speaking at the fourth biennenial conference of AAGSU here, said.
"This is total autocratic rule and sheer betrayal of the people of Assam who gave them absolute majority just hundred days back (in the assembly polls). We condemn it in the strongest words," he added.
"The AAGSU shall be a part of any joint movement throughout Assam either led by the AASU (All Assam Students Union) or KMSS (Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti)," Dewan said elaborating on the need of a joint protest like the India Against Corruption movement to protest the Indo-Bangla land swap deal and big dams.
AAGSU general secretary Moni Kumar Limboo speaking on the role of Gorkhas in the nation building process since pre-independence slammed the district administration for allegedly failing to provide security to lives and property along the Assam-Nagaland border in and around Merapani".
