The CBI had taken over the case in January 2011 and arrested one person, who was allegedly involved in the murder.
Bharati, while addressing mediapersons in Kolkata today, said: “We are not satisfied with the way the CBI is carrying out the inquiry. Many times, we tried to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but could not succeed. We want justice in this brutal murder case.”
She further added: “We have read in newspapers that the chief minister has ordered judicial inquiry into the political murders of her party cadres. So, we also want a judicial inquiry in this case as my husband was murdered in front of a huge crowd, in broad daylight. All the persons named in the FIR are moving freely. Earlier, I had met Banerjee before the elections during her visit to Darjeeling. She had promised me that she will get justice for me. I want to remind her of her promise.”
Sanjog Tamang, son of Madan Tamang, said: “We have been trying to request the state government for a judicial inquiry, but we are yet to get an appointment with the Chief Minister. We have sent three letters to her in the last three months, but are yet to get any response.”
Meanwhile, Sanjog has filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court mentioning that they are not happy with the CBI inquiry. “We have got a hearing date for our writ petition on Wednesday,” he said.
Significantly, the CBI took charge of the probe following a writ petition filed by Bharati at the Calcutta High Court asking for transfer of the probe from the CID to the CBI. The court had asked the CBI to file the probe report within a month. The CBI asked for an extension regarding filing of the probe report in view of the prevailing unrest in the Hills. The court then asked the premier investigating agency in the country to file the report by 23 June.
The High Court had also asked the CBI to take over the case related to the disappearance of the prime accused in the Tamang murder case, Nickole Tamang on 20 January following a petition lodged by Nichole’s wife Pema Tamang. Nickole went missing from CID custody at Pintail Village near Sukna on 22 August last year.
