Gorkhaland Liberation Organisation (GLO) president Chhatre(Chatray) Subba Released
Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), Sept 9 (IBNS): A local court on Friday acquitted Gorkhaland Liberation Organisation (GLO) president Chhatre Subba, who was accused of attempting murder on Gorkha National Liberation Front president Subash Ghising in Darjeeling in 2001.
The Jalpaiguri's fast track 3rd court additional district and sessions judge Sanchita Sarkar also set free five others - Shekar Dewan, Gunge Lama, Shyam Bahadur Karki, Kumar Chettri and Bijoy Chettri along with Chhatre Subba, clearing them from murder charges on former Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council chairman Ghising.
Altogether 71 witnesses appeared in the case.
Ghishing survived bullet wounds on his skull after being shot at Pankhabari in Kurseong on February 10, 2001.
He was coming back to Darjeeling from New Delhi after holding a discussion with the central leadership to confer upgraded status to the DGHC under 6th schedule, his convoy was attacked in the jungle by some miscreants.
Ghising had received a bullet injury and immediately admitted to a private nursing home in Siliguri. In this incident a youth was killed on the spot by the bodyguards of Ghising.
Subba was arrested in 2001 by Bengal Police from Indo-Nepal border for his alleged involvement in attempt on the live of Subash
Ghisingh, at Sat Ghumti, near Kurseong.
Subba strongly opposed the idea of according special status to the Darjeeling hills and revolted against Ghising led GNLF. Since the formation of DGHC, he had preferred to remain in the opposition and contested the DGHC elections agains the GNLF candidates. He, however, could not be elected as the councillor in the Hill Council.
Subba was charge sheeted and hearing began in Darjeeling court since then.
But the counsels of Subba, who had been apprehending of trouble had pleaded for transferring the case to the Jalpaiguri court.
Altogether 11 had been arrested in this case, but the Calcutta High court had released five others on bail.
Hundreds of followers came down from the hills to hear the court proceeding and welcomed the GLO chief to return home safely.
The talks had been going round for past two years about the release of Subba from the jail.
