A priest and two nuns have been appointed by the government in Paschimbanga, formerly West Bengal, to help streamline the state’s public distribution system (PDS), which distributes food to the poor.
Jesuit Father Irudaya Jothi, director of Udayani Social Action Forum, Sister Sebeshna Thappa of the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny, and Loreto Sr Sabrina Edwards of the Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Center have been tapped to aid the PDS.
Fr Jothi will serve in Hooghly district, while Sr Thappa will provide monitoring in Darjeeling district and Sr Edwards will work in Siliguri sub-division.
“By bringing in reputable non-governmental organizations into the DPS, the government has shown a sincere desire to clean up the system,” said Fr Jothi.
He added that similar non-governmental involvement should be implemented at lower levels of administration to improve monitoring at all levels.
Udayani is planning a workshop for all members of the monitoring team to train them on potential loopholes in the current system that has led to inefficiency, Fr Jothi added.
