4 Gorkha Regiment reach Himachal for reunion

SUBATHU: Located near Dharampur in Himachal Pradesh, the picturesque cantonment of Subathu witnessed a historic moment on Saturday evening, when hundreds of old soldiers of the 4 Gorkha Regiment of the Army from across the country as well abroad, reached here at the 14 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) to celebrate the regiment's re-union.

Around 1,500 veterans, war widows, retired and serving soldiers of various ranks of 4 Gorkha Regiment along with their families and dependents will be honoured as special guests during the celebration from Sunday to Wednesday at Subathu. The reunion of the regiment comes every four years.

British officers from the UK, Major Geoffrey Robert Lloyd, a 4 Gorkha Regiment officer and Major David Franklin Owens, a fourth generation British officer, who were part of the 4 Gorkha Regiment before Independence and served during pre-independence era in India, besides many other dependents and kin of soldiers of 4 Gorkha Regiment have arrived in Subathu from the UK.

Major Lloyd said the reunion is an event from where he draws a new inspiration to live more. While talking to TOI after reaching here he said, "I want to be a part of 4 Gorkha Regiment till my last breath. The reunion is an occasion where I'll find my old colleagues and soldiers with whom I worked and spent my good and bad days with."

The Colonel of the 4 Gorkha Regiment, Major General P S Paul also reached the centre and was received by the commandant of 14 GTC, Brigadier A G Kundalkar.

Old veterans of all ranks along with their children, besides war widows of the 4 Gorkha Regiment also arrived here to be a part of the reunion.

The four-day programme includes a Guard of Honour by the troops of 4 Gorkha Regiment, besides wreath laying, a traditional ceremony of paying tributes to war heroes by retired and serving officers.

To welcome the guests, various reception centres have been set up at various places including Gorakhpur, Dehradun, Bakloh, Dharamshala, Ambala, Chandigarh, Kalka and Dharampur.
